How Are Pattern and Colour Made in Tile Art?
Tilework is a ceramic art in which a pattern is painted under the glaze on a quartz body and fired at high heat. Short answer: Before firing the colour looks matte; at high heat the glaze and pigment turn to glass, and cobalt blue, turquoise and coral red gain permanent, luminous tones. Pattern: Geometric weaves, rumi and hatayi scrolls, frieze script and mihrab forms are the most common figure-free compositions. Palette: The classical palette is cobalt blue, turquoise, coral red, green and white. Each colour comes from a different mineral oxide. At Arakiye tile panels are one of a kind; every pattern is drawn by hand before firing and certified with the master's signature.
